Handunugoda’s owner Herman Gunaratne was a professional tea planter in charge of almost 100,000 acres of British and later state owned tea plantations on the rooftop of the island of Ceylon’s Nuwara Eliya. After many years of working for foreign tea companies he finally returned to his family’s land, the Handunugoda Tea Estate.
