Virgin White Tea
To the best of my knowledge this is the only tea in the world that is completely untouched by hand.
- M.H. Gunaratne, Proprietor & Tea Planter
Virgin White Tea is a highly coveted world-renowned tea known for it’s subtle liquoring with notes of pine & honey. Using an ancient Chinese method of processing tea, the young tea leaves are cut by gold plated scissors shortly before the buds have unfurled without ever touching human skin. The unfurled buds are then organically dried allowing the tea to retain it’s delicate flavour.
This rare tea is sold in 5 gram quantities.
Virgin White Tea is an unfermented tea that is pure of touch, pesticides and undergoing the least amount of processing, this tea has unusually high levels of antioxidants at 10.11%. White tea contains more antioxidants than any other tea. With health benefits that are greater than green tea, white tea inhibits the growth of cancer cells, slows the aging process, prevents tooth decay, and improves the immune system. Naturally low in tannin and caffeine, white tea contains the lowest caffeine level of all teas at 15 milligrams per 5 ounce cup.
The First Virgin White Tea: An Emperor’s Request
“Once upon a time
in the great land of China lived an emperor who demanded only the best white tea. To satisfy the great Emperor’s demands, the Chinese mandarins employed virgins to harvest the finest buds.
With care the virgins cut the white tea with golden scissors and caught the tender leaves in golden bowls. This most delicate tea was then given as a tribute to the Emperor. As the great Emperor sipped the tea, he remarked upon the pureness. No human anatomy had ever touched this tea save his lips.”
- Virgin ‘tribute teas’ believed to be offered to the Emperor during the Tsong and Tsang dynasties 5th and 6th century B.C.
Birth Of Today’s Virgin White Tea
In a visit to Grasse, a perfume city in the South of France, M.H. Gunaratne met a perfumer also called a nose. On his counter lay small parcels of Jasmine flowers from 15 different countries. When Gunaratne asked why the perfumer had jasmine flowers from different parts of the world, he learned that the difference in smell comes from the hands of the pickers. The perfumer proclaimed “Sweat and human oils are a manifestation of your food habits, people who eat different types of food exude specific smells.”
Gunaratne immediately realized that these pearls of wisdom were known to the ancient Chinese tea masters. Following in the old tradition, his white tea is harvested by women wearing white gloves who cut the tips of the plants using gold plated scissors. Taking care not to harm the shoots, the tea is collected into small white bowls which is then organically dried.
From Royal Houses To Famous Cafés
Gunaratne’s Virgin White Tea became a world story, assuming celebrity status in the tea world as the best white tea available. In demand around the world, it’s clientèle ranges from Middle Eastern Royal Houses to famous Paris cafés.
Now Virgin White Tea is available to discerning tea connoisseurs of Canada only through De Vos Tea. We hope you enjoy this tea and it’s story as much as we do.
